Did you watch the NBA All Star game festivities on Saturday night? I did, or at least I tried to. It actually started on Friday night with the rookie game. With Ayo being involved, I wanted to check it out. After seeing how it was going, kind of like a pickup game for fun, I turned it off. I heard that Ayo hurt his thumb… great, that’s all we need. Hope he’s OK. Saturday night brought the traditional All Star weekend stuff.

It all started with the Skills Competition. First off, please, please do not have Dwyane “I spelled my first name wrong” Wade on there again. I mean, he was making it out like winning this was something to add to your career accolades. Like, take it serious guys… this will reflect on your legacy. Wow, just wow. That being said, the actual event itself was pretty cool I thought. I like how they broke down the teams… the rookies, the Giannis’, and the Cavs. I’m not really a fan of the whole thing being decided by a half court shot, but other than that, I liked the stuff they did. I’d have to think on that a bit more, to come up with something better, but it was cool.

The Three Point competition was the star of the evening; it wasn’t always that way. Unfortunately, Zach couldn’t even crack the top 3 in the first round… and he was the 4th shooter!!! What a bust. Maybe this is a sign Zach. Shoot less treys; drive more to the bucket. Of course, I hope Vooch wasn’t watching, as a big man, KAT, brought home the 3 point title. Don’t get me wrong; I love the 3 pointer. I just think it’s shot WAY too much nowadays, especially when it’s preferred over a wide open driving layup, especially when you have big men, who should be in the paint, camped out there waiting to chuck it up. But in this competition, that’s exactly what it’s about. I like the addition of the two deeper treys. The allocation of the money balls to different racks is OK. Overall, it was fun.

That brings us to the worst part of the night. What the hell kind of slam dunk competition was that? After the dude from the Rockets missed his 4th straight attempt, I walked away; I heard that guy from the Knicks won it, but didn’t see anything after that. This year was a clear indication of some much needed changes in the slam dunk competition; I have some thoughts. Time limit. You have 30, 60 seconds to complete a dunk; this includes time for any and all hysterics that comes along with it, like changing jerseys and shoes, or putting something around your neck, before dunking the ball. Score penalties. For every missed dunk, you get 1 point deducted off each judges’ scorecard. So if on your 3rd attempt, you throw down a crazy ass dunk that deserves a 10, the most you can get is an 8. I know there will always be some subjectivity to the judges’ score cards, this will help give a bit of structure. After all, who wants to see a guy miss dunk after dunk? Aren’t these guys practicing them beforehand? Finally, open it back up to 8 competitors. Just because LeBron never participated because he was too worried about getting hurt, or most likely, too worried about losing, doesn’t mean the NBA can’t wrangle up 8 guys to compete. Those are just three thoughts off the top; if I spent a bit more thinking about it, I could probably gather a few more.

OK, that’s it for now. Overall, a decent evening of entertainment, unfortunately topped off with a bust of a slam dunk contest. Long gone are the days of MJ, Nique, Vinsanity… heck, even Lavine and that guy he went back and forth with were awesome. Need to do something there to bring back the excitement. Maybe half of the 8 competitors have to be all stars??? At least the casual NBA fan would know who these guys are… Anyways, looking forward to the 2nd half of the season; not interested in the game itself on Sunday.
