January 6, 1985, Candlestick Park, NFC Championship game, 49ers 23 Bears 0. A true butt kicking for those 1984 Bears. Kind of like those 1990 Bulls against the Pistons, or the 2009 Blackhawks against the Red Wings; hopefully like those 2015 Cubs against the Mets. A tough postseason loss only set the stage for what was to come. Fire up that VCR, because it is 1985, and fast forward 9 months later to October 13, week 6 of the 1985 NFL season. This is where we left off in our shuffle down memory lane.
The location was the same, the teams were the same, the results were a little different. Back in that 1984 NFC championship game, the 49ers were favored by 10 points; in this tilt, they were only favored by 4; man, only if I had started gambling when I was 9, I would have made a lot of money on these boys. The 49ers rolled into this game with a 3-2 record, while the Bears were holding a perfect 5-0. It was lunch time in San Francisco, and there was a special. Now Serving: Revenge.
The Bears came into this game with a focus; they had one thing on their mind.. they wanted the special. Yes, the entire 85 season was played with a focus, but this game had a little something extra going on. Getting shutout and embarassed the year before stuck with these guys. They didn’t forget. Now it was time to do something about it.
The Bears jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the 1st half. Sweetness started the scoring with a TD in the 1st quarter. It was really a vintage game for Payton. 24 rushes, 132 yards, 2 TDs, 5 receptions, 34 yards… that would be 33.6 points in my fantasy PPR league. I can see the one highlight run now, in the Bears road white uniforms, running through the baseball infield, stretching the ball towards the goal line, and getting 6 points. Classic. The defense came to play too…

The only touchdown Frisco would score on this day would be via an INT return for a TD in the 2nd quarter. That coupled with a 2nd quarter Ray Wersching FG, got it to 16-10; that’s all they got. 67 rushing yards on the day and only 160 passing yards. The great Joe Montana was sacked 7 times: 2 each by Dent and Wilber, 1 each from DD, Mongo, and Otis. 4 forced fumbles, 2 recovered. We put the clamps down on them. It was a dominating effort. 26-10 was the final score. Mmmm, mmmm good.
This was also the week where the Fridge was born…. on offense. In response to Bill Walsh using Guy McIntyre in the backfield in the NFC championship game the year before, if my memory serves me correct, Ditka lined the Fridge up in the backfield in this one to flatten a defender. (He actually did carry the ball…twice) A star was born. He didn’t get in the end zone.. yet, but we’ve only just begun. He would hit the national stage the following week against none other than Forrest Gregg and the Packers. I like that in Ditka. He got his own personal shot back at Walsh. Forget about the fact that he got pulled over for drunk driving when he returned from the West Coast, or that this would be the last Bears victory EVER in Candlestick Park. This was the game we remember, this win, this memorable win in our memorable season. Now we have 2 memorable wins, 2 all-time wins out of our 6-0 record to start 1985.
Now 6-0, the Bears would return home in Week 7 to host Green Bay on Monday night. This train was rolling, and was about to put the pedal to the medal. It’s time to renew the oldest rivalry in the NFL. Ahhh… the days when we owned them. Week 7 is next.
