Coronation: the act or ceremony of crowing a king or queen.
We had to wait an extra day… not sure why. The anticipation between the Game 4 victory on Sunday and the scheduled Game 5 on Wednesday was crazy. The excitement was building. Finally, on June 12, 1991, at 8pm Chicago time, the ball would be tossed in the air. The Bulls were 48 minutes from their 1st NBA title. I like saying that.
I couldn’t wait. I couldn’t wait for this game… I couldn’t wait to talk about this game again. The Lakers without Worthy and Scott had to rely on Elden Campbell, Terry Teagle, and Tony Smith. They played well in this game, especially Campbell at the start, making me think I wanted to see those old guys back. Magic played his ass of as usual with a triple double: 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 20 assists! Would it be enough? We all know better by now.
It was the Bulls time. The song that summed up the season, was the same one they used for the title of the video that summed up the season; that VHS tape that sits at my parents’ house. Learning To Fly was a very good description of what happened during this 1991 season. The Bulls had been good for a while. With the best player in the league, some budding young stars, some veterans, and a wise coach, the Bulls had it all. Yet, they couldn’t get over that hump. That hump was the Pistons, and that hump was in the rear view mirror. Now, finally putting the mental and the physical together, the Bulls were focused on finishing the job.
Jordan had double digit assists for the second game in a row. One of my favorite parts of this game was Phil asking MJ in the huddle; who’s open? Still, after all this time, to the very last quarter, MJ had to be reminded that he had to trust his teammates. MJ, with his first title in sight, wanting to do it all, all the time, had to rely on the team to get it done. He had to rely on a veteran point guard in John Paxson to hit the open shot… and he did… time after time down the stretch. 20 points for Pax. There was somebody else who would help too.

Scottie Pippen had a monstrous effort. 32 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals. Remember, it was Phil putting Scottie on Magic that helped turn this series. Scottie’s defense was amazing with the crazy wing span, and his offense wasn’t too shabby either. That song, about the Bulls 1991 season, could really apply to Pippen too. He was the one that was needed. Batman needed his Robin. If there were any questions of who that was, if Pippen could be that guy, I think that was settled now. He had the ball in his hands as the final seconds ticked down in this game.
As I read about this game to make sure I had my facts straight, I came across some Marv Albert quotes from the series. Of course the call of the famous MJ shot in Game 2, but the last call he made was mentioned too. The one I can hear vividly in my head after I read it. “Final seconds. Magic’s 3 point attempt blocked, Pippen comes away with it, and the Chicago Bulls have won their first ever NBA championship”. Can you hear it? Can you dig it!
Finally. The Bulls had won it all. I was so happy. I remember the celebration on the court. I remember the one sign saying: MJ for President. I remember the happiness… so pure for this first ever title. The title so sweet for this team, and that one guy. That one guy who held the trophy like a baby in the locker room with his dad’s arm around him. The Bulls were finally champions. MJ was finally a champion. We had reached the pinnacle of the NBA world.
And as Jordan’s tears came down his cheeks, mine did too. I get like that… emotional, when my teams win big games. Just thinking about it, remembering that time, those feelings, gets me all worked up. It was these days, 1991 and the rest of the decade that lives in my heart. The happy times… the glory years.
But wait there’s more… no, I’m not talking about more titles. Let’s just enjoy this one… who knows if we’ll win more… wink wink. No, I’m talking about a city wide celebration that remains. I’m talking about the official coronation of these Bulls in front of their fans in Chicago. The Bulls were champions and we were going to celebrate. It was time for them to get on that plane, and come back to Sweet Home Chicago. There would be a small gathering that would take place in Grant Park to welcome home that championship club. Yep, I was there. Let’s relive that moment next, and put a bow on this feature.

Learning to Fly video was awesome! All those MJ passes to Paxson, who kept drilling them down the stretch in game 5 and was 9-12 from the field. Pip with 32 and MJ with 30 as the Bulls shot 54% from the field to close out magic and the lakers for their first ever NBA title! Little did we know it would be the first of a 3peat as well as 6 in 8 years. The Bulls were damn good, and the nba just began to find that out. MJ and the core would remain, kind of like the Bhawks, and pieces would fill in over the years. Nothing is really sweeter than that first title, though. After waiting so long, the joy and emotion is all let out…cant wait to find that out when the Cubs win!
