February 12, 2016: The Beginning

posted in: Bulls | 1

And with the third pick of the 1979 NBA draft, the New York Knickerbockers select Bill Cartwright. Ok, so maybe that’s not the famous draft pick you remember, but that day almost 12 years earlier was the first date a member of the 1991 NBA champion Chicago Bulls made it into the league; it was the beginning of a dynasty.

We didn’t know that back then, but when the Bulls traded Charles Oakley to the Knicks for Cartwright in 1988, our starting center was set. Man what an ugly shot he had.  The longest tenured Bull on that team is a little more well known.

That of course was Jordan. Entering into the league in 84, the rest of the Bulls roster was completely turned over before that first title run. Paxson was the next to join us in 1985.  The next big year was 1987.

The Bulls traded Olden Polynice plus draft picks for the 5th overall pick that year. Seattle had chosen a kid from Central Arkansas with the last name Pippen.  We used our pick at 10 on Horace Grant; the starters were set.  Not a bad draft.

The next year at 11, we grabbed Will Perdue.  The following year at 6, we grabbed Stacey King. Now these guys bring us analysis of the current Bulls through our TVs, back then they were champions.  Back to the draft in 89, the Bulls picked up BJ Armstrong, who is currently doing a bang up job as Derrick Rose’s agent; back then he was backing up Paxson.  That was the last Bulls draft pick on this team, although in 1990 before the championship season began, we selected a European by the name of Toni Kukoc.  He’d be around for some rings too.

Filling in the rest of the roster was Craig Hodges from Phoenix in 1988, Levingston from the Hawks, Hopson from the Nets, and an undrafted free agent from North Carolina Scott Williams, all in 1990.  Yep, only 12 guys on that roster back then.

After that 2nd straight loss to Detroit in the postseason, Doug Collins was shown the door, while assistant coach Phil Jackson took the helm. Yeah, he lost to the Pistons that first year too. But that would be the last time.

Let’s not forget about the assistant coaches.  Tex Winter, or Mr. Triangle if you may, Johnny Bach, the keeper of the Dobermans, and Jim Cleamons, who’s still coaching…for the New York Knicks, go figure.

It’s Johhny Red Kerr and Jim Durham with the call, Ray Clay calling the starting lineup, and the Chicago Stadium rocking;  it’s November 2, 1990, and the Bulls open the season vs the Sixers…with a loss.  Let the season begin.
